The Canada Science and Technology Museums presents:
Science in Society: For Better or for Worse?

Scientific and technological discoveries have changed the world. Many discoveries — such as penicillin, vaccines, and electricity — have been highly beneficial to humans. Others, however, have had negative repercussions, with ongoing and serious consequences for people and the environment: we now live with a hole in the ozone layer, pesticides in our foods, and superbugs. Will new discoveries be for better or for worse? Although scientific advances offer hope towards solving some of our current global challenges, can science hope to patch up all the world’s ills? Or will science contribute to more catastrophic results, taking the planet to the point of no return? Are the potential consequences serious enough that we should put the brakes on research? And how can we ensure that new research is and will be used wisely?

Airport Scanners: Protecting our Security or Invading our Privacy?(view poster)

Following the 9/11 attacks and the attempted Christmas Day bombing of Northwest Airlines Flight 253 in 2009, airport security measures continue to become more rigorous, but at what cost? Millimeter wave scanners have been deployed for security screening in some airports and while they are innovative, and intended to be less intrusive than physical searches, are these three-dimensional scans actually making flights safer or are they invading the privacy rights of passengers?

Information Overload…Is Digital Technology Really Helping Us Stay Informed?

As an information-hungry society, we have extensive amounts of information and news feeds accessible through smart technologies.
But do we really need or want this amount of information at our fingertips 24 hours a day? Is there such thing as information overload? Is there a problem with volume of information or our limitations in processing it? Are we so hungry for instant information, that we are ready to ignore validity of content and the risk of misinformation? In a global information market, should we struggle to stay on top of everything?
